This Sunday: God's Ultimate Will for Your Life

Hey everyone. This Sunday morning we start our Kings of Kings series as we look at the early life of Jesus.

This Sunday we'll be looking at Matthew 1:1-17, which, if we you read ahead, you'll see is a long list of names. In fact, it's a genealogy. Sounds like an exciting passage to read, right? Well it is, actually. Genealogies were very important back in Bible times if you wanted to prove where a person came from. Matthew's main goal in writing this genealogy was to show that Jesus was indeed royal (he came from kings) and Jewish (he came from Abraham). He left out some names and included others that you and I may have left out. (You know that crazy aunt or distant cousin that you have in your family that you wish people would not know about it? Yeah, those. Matthew included those types of people as well).

Well on Sunday morning we are going to be looking at how God ultimately accomplishes his will through all types of people - even people like you and your crazy family members. We'll also see what God's ultimate will is for your life.

If all goes according to plan, we'll have a podcast of the sermon up on iTunes by the beginning of next week so those of you who can't get your hands on a DVD can still listen on your iPod or mp3 player as you please.

See you all on Sunday!

King of Kings

This Sunday, February 28th, will be my first official day as Pastor of David Baptist Church. Are you excited? I am!

Just so you know, my preaching goal throughout my entire first year at DBC is to re-introduce, and in many cases introduce, Jesus to people. For many Christians who have known Jesus for a long time, or have been involved in church life for many years, it can become quite easy to "get over" Jesus. We tend to forget about everything that He has done for us in our life - especially when things are running smooth. That's why I'm excited to be preaching through the Gospel of Matthew starting this Sunday.

The first series is titled King of Kings. We'll spend eight weeks looking at the early life and ministry of Jesus Christ - where he came from, who he was, why he was/is such a big deal, how his early ministry started out and what we can learn from Him in the process. Invite a friend and be ready to learn about why Jesus is the only King that you should need or want for your life.

Nip/Tuck

As you can see the blog has undergone a face-lift of sorts. I figured that a new calling necessitated a new look. Also, the content of this blog will become more regular and predictable as I start to get settled into my new calling. Here is what you can expect from this blog:

1. Sermon Previews and Insights - I hope to post a regular dose of thoughts from both previous and past sermons, as well as a heads-up on upcoming sermon series.

2. Links - I am going to make a concerted effort to post a weekly link that is directly related to children's/family ministry and/or parenting.

3. Video Blogposts - from time to time I'll take a minute to post a video of something that I want to share 'face-to-face' so to speak and not through the written word.

Of course I'll also be posting on church activities that I'd like to highlight or any contemporary or cultural issue that I'd like to weigh-in on as well.

Check back in the next few days as I'll be previewing my first sermon series as we prepare to journey through the book of Matthew. See you soon!

Transition

In one week my life will take a dramatic change. Next Sunday, February 21st will be my last as the Children's Pastor at First Baptist Columbia. Where will I be going? North Carolina.

On February 7, 2010, I was voted in as the new pastor of David Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. This past week has been very emotional for me and my family. The Spirit moved in a tremendous way the day that I preached at David Baptist. The atmosphere of the entire service was filled with Him. I pray that DBC will be a church where that is present every week. With God holding me accountable for that from now on, I sure hope that is the case!

The following Monday I had to announce to my boss, staff, and friends that I was leaving FBC. That was a very emotional day as well. My wife and I really love the people at First Baptist and we will be leaving some really good friends.

But we know that the Lord has without a doubt called me to preach, pastor, and love another congregation now. And that excites us.

To those dear friends at First Baptist: thank you for loving and supporting us for these past few years. Please continue to check this blog as I will be sharing weekly what God is teaching me and the people at DBC.

To those dear people at David Baptist: pray for our family as we make our way up there and be ready for David Baptist Church to be a place where Jesus is King!
